Connection instructions

BEFORE CONNECTING READ RULES!

For connection a terminal software is needed that can connect using Telnet or SSH protocols (SyncTERM, PuTTY, HyperTerminal), alternatively a Web browser or NNTP client (newsreader). Other equipment is listed in the section about a certain connection method.

Using the Internet

Except terminal client, Internet connection will be needed. Everything will do, even packet radio and slow broadband on rural areas forgotten by telecom companies. Connection data:

Server address: miyanet.moe
Telnet
Port number: 23
SSH
Port number: 22
HTTP (using Web browser)
Port number: 81
NNTP (using newsreader)
Port number: 119
Login: anonymous

NNTP logins are performed only as anonymous users unless you get a separate username and password assigned (other than registered account!). Anonymous users cannot post.

Using analog telephony

There, analog modem will be needed and a terminal client capable of handling phone modems. Using POTS (traditional landline) is recommended, however VoIP networks should work as well. Connections over GSM have failed during handshaking due to compression and echo cancelling, however using dedicated GSM terminals may work.

External analog modems may require RS-232 <-> USB converters to connect them to modern PCs.

In order to connect internal modem, a certain slot and driver package are necessary. Older computers may also require changing certain BIOS settings or switching jumpers on computer's mainrboard. - check user manuals before proceeding.

Configure terminal client to connect to modem - point COM port that is claimed by the modem. It is possible to connect directly to a certain COM device (using "Serial" connection mode).

Then, key in phone number from the upper table. Dialing options may vary between telephone carriers. After connecting directly to the modem, use ATDT command (tone dialing - the most frequent option) or ATDP (pulse dialing). The modem may play handshake sounds using its internal speaker, which can be stopped with ATL0M0 command (minimum volume, speaker off every time) or ATL0M1(minimum volume, speaker on only for dialing and handshaking) - read your modem's manual for further information. Using HyperTerminal, speaker can be muted only in modem options, in the control panel, because Windows initiates modems before calling with control panel settings.

During connection, in the terminal window, a CONNECT xxxx, information may appear, where "xxxx" is speed of the connection shown in bits per second. If it doesn't show (it may be just CONNECT without a number and characters will appear slowly, it may mean that connection speed is 300 bps (Bell 103 standard).

To disconnect, select "disconnect" in your terminal software or use +++ATH0. When disconnecting or if the connection is dropped, a NO CARRIER message will appear. Modem will be back in ready mode.

After connecting

SSH

When attempting to connect using SSH, a login as: will show. On your first logon, it is advised to connect as Guest in order to see how Miyanet works.

To register, type New and type in required data. Registration wizard will go through the process.

Caution - terminal may asks for a password of new@miyanet.moe (or guest@miyanet.moe) user. Press any letter key and ENTER - it cannot be empty. Then, you will receive Invalid logon message. After that, simply press ENTER and account creation form will appear. Unfortunately, empty password field may make the software to shoot out errors and refuse to connect, at least with PuTTY. Same applies for guest logons.

Telnet and telephone

It works almost the same as SSH, however, it shows an answer screen instead of login as: prompt.

If characters are multiplied, exit to command mode using +++, then enter ATE1F1O1. A moment later, the terminal should be back in data mode without doubled characters.

NNTP

After starting up and logging in, download sub-boards (newsgroups) list and subscribe those, which you are interested in. After that, download threads.
